Halifax Town Council faces a somewhat light agenda for the first meeting of the new year.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Halifax Town Hall.

The main order of business will be to consider adoption of an attorney resolution that clarifies action after the December public hearing on solar sitting ordinances and zoning amendments.

On Dec. 12, council voted to change a zoning amendment allowing small-scale solar facilities in residential districts of town.

At the same time, they voted to strike the portion of the amendment that would allow medium-scale solar projects in residential districts.

Vice Chair Gail Bosiger made the motion and Councilman Bill Covington seconded the motion. The motion passed in a 4-2 vote, with Councilman Jack Dunavant and Councilman Malcolm Bowen voting “No.”

Previously, solar facilities have only been allowed in M-1 (manufacturing) zoned districts in the town of Halifax. To date, there are no commercial solar projects in the town limits.

A total of three zoning amendments pertaining to solar projects came before council at their monthly business meeting. The planning commission drafted the amendments at the direction of council. Council only took a definitive vote on one of the amendments.

Approval of the zoning amendment allowing small-scale solar projects in residential districts followed a lengthy public hearing in which multiple people spoke, mainly in favor but some against solar development in the town of Halifax.

Also on Tuesday’s council agenda is the monthly report from Halifax Police Department Chief Stuart Comer in addition to the department’s annual awards.
